10 Things to Know Before Moving to Cincinnati

Cincinnati, like most large towns, has its good and its bad. If you are thinking about moving to Cincinnati, maybe for a job or to be closer to family, you should take a trip to experience the area before starting the home search. Cincinnati is a part of the Midwest and with that comes that good old Midwestern charm. Most in the city seem overly polite, but like most cities the driving and traffic around downtown can be an issue. However, many that come to Cincinnati to visit do like it here.

1. Kentucky or “The South” is Simply a Bridge Away.

While Cincinnati is in Ohio and is considered a midwestern town, Kentucky is just a rock skip away across the river. If you’re a fan of the south and the old southern ways, don’t be alarmed, you are not that far. Cincinnati is a unique city because of that, you can have the best of both worlds. It’s common to live in Northern Kentucky, but work across the river in Ohio, and vice versa. 

2. Festivals

There is not a weekend that doesn’t have some sort of festival going on throughout the summer. From local church festivals to music festivals, there are a variety of activities for families & for single young adults. Festivals are a great way to meet others and become a part of the area. 

3. Weather is Anyone’s Guess

Because of the location of the city, the weather is anyone’s guess. It could snow in April and be 90°F in November. It can be both a blessing and a curse. It really is anyone’s guess, so you will need to plan ahead if you plan on visiting the area.

4. Amazing Breweries

Checking out the various breweries is a must and there are plenty. This is a great way to meet some locals too and become familiar with the area. 

5. An Endless List of Amazing Parks

The hiking and bike tails in Cincinnati may shock you, even downtown has some solid options like Eden Park, and Smale Park which has a beautiful path that goes all the way down the Ohio River downtown including green fields, large porch like swings, multiple playgrounds for children, and more. Surprisingly, getting outdoors is never an issue when you live in Cincinnati, even in the downtown area. .

6.The Cost of Living

The cost of living is something that is appealing to many that are looking to move to Cincinnati. This alone can be reason enough to take the plunge. According to PayScale, the cost of living in Cincinnati, Ohio is 8% lower than the national average, which can be especially appealing for those who enjoy city life, but want to avoid the high cost of city living. 

7. Snow

If you come from further south, you should be prepared for snow. Cincinnati gets snow and lots of it. If this isn’t something you are used to, it can be a shock. The roads slow down, but they don’t close. Driving anywhere near or around the city can be miserable even with just a light snowfall. 

8. Diverse Mix of Neighborhoods

When thinking about moving to Cincinnati, you should visit the various surrounding neighborhoods to find a place that best fits you. There is a lot of diversity and various architecture throughout the downtown. The further east or west you go, the more land your able to find if that’s something you’re interested in. Kentucky can also be just as close as the east or west side.

9. Public Transportation or Lack Thereof

Some people might be used to larger cities having metros and other public transportation systems. However, Cincinnati’s public transportation system is quite limited. While we have a metro system, it is relatively small and inefficient. Be prepared to have to own your own vehicle to get around.

10. The Political Divide

While this might not be a problem for some, for others, this could cause an issue. The city is pretty evenly divided between Liberals and Conservatives which can cause tension from time to time.
